O304 was first described in thescientific literature in 2018 by a group working in the SwedishUniversity in Umea.1 However,press reports from 2016 alreadymention the compound, hence itwas likely discovered in the early 2010`s. 
O304 activates the enzyme AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK).This enzyme is a regulator ofenergy homeostasis in many cellsand is physiologically activated inresponse to an energy shortageimposed byphysical activityand/or caloric restriction.Bybinding directly to AMPK and enhancingitsactivity.O304 increases glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and improves mitochondrial function, thereby promoting efficient energy utilization. Unlike indirect AMPK activators such as metformin,O304 does not rely on cellular stress or inhibition of mitochondrial respiration to activate thepathway, whichreduces the risk of off-targeteffects.
O-304 is studied in experimental metabolic models examining energy utilization, insulin-independent glucose handling, and lipid metabolism signaling pathways. Research interest centers on its role in metabolic flexibility and endurance-related cellular adaptation.
